The Student Handbook is an essential guide to academic and student life at the Norman Manley Law School. It introduces the School’s administrative offices and departments, outlines the services they provide and explains how each area supports students throughout their period of study.
The Handbook also brings together key academic and practical information, including programme requirements, assessments, examinations, student responsibilities and the use of platforms such as Westlaw TWEN, Microsoft Teams and official School communication channels. Students are encouraged to read it carefully and refer to it throughout the academic year.
View or Download the Student HandbookThe academic requirements of the Norman Manley Law School are governed by the Council of Legal Education Professional Law Schools Regulations, 2016. The Regulations set out important provisions relating to the course of study, attendance, assessments, examinations, progression and other matters that affect students throughout the programme.
All students are expected to read and become familiar with the Regulations and associated amendments.
From time to time, the Council of Legal Education or the School may also introduce policy guidelines to give effect to, clarify or supplement particular provisions. These will be communicated to students through the School’s official channels.

The Norman Manley Law School provides academic, administrative, wellbeing and technical support throughout your period of study. Use the sections below to identify the appropriate service and contact point.

The Registry supports the academic administration of the School and assists students with matters relating to:
- assignments and examinations;
- examination cards and grade notifications;
- script reviews and examination review applications;
- official academic notices;
- classroom bookings, lockers and health cards.

Transcript and Other Document Requests
The Office of the Registrar provides document services for current students and alumni. These include academic transcripts, status letters, verification of School-issued documents, certification of the Legal Education Certificate and other official records.
Making a Request
Document requests are currently processed manually. Before submitting a request, download and review the Document Services Guide, which outlines:
- the documents and services available;
- applicable processing and dispatch fees;
- processing times;
- payment methods;
- submission and collection arrangements; and
- important requirements for transcripts and other official records.
Applicants should complete the relevant request form and follow the submission instructions provided in the Guide. Processing begins after the correctly completed form has been received and payment has been confirmed.

Student Affairs provides guidance and support on student wellbeing, academic regulations, student conduct and other matters affecting the student experience. The Office can also help direct students to the appropriate service or member of staff for further assistance.
The IT Help Desk assists students with access to School systems, including the Student Portal, institutional email, Microsoft Teams, TWEN, password resets and other technical issues.
When requesting assistance, include your full name, student identification number, the system affected and a screenshot of any error message, where possible.

About The NMLSSA
Overview of the Norman Manley Law School Students’ Association (NMLSSA)
The Norman Manley Law School Students’ Association (herein referred to as ‘the Association’) was founded on March 16, 1994, and is the official representative body for students at the Norman Manley Law School. The Association was established pursuant to Regulation 24 of the Council of Legal Education’s Regulations for Students. It serves as the collective voice of the student body, advocating for students’ academic, professional, social, and general welfare while fostering constructive engagement with the School’s Administration and the Council of Legal Education.
Moreover, the Association is responsible for representing student interests, coordinating academic and social initiatives, promoting student welfare, supporting clubs and societies, and creating opportunities for leadership, advocacy, professional development, and community engagement. Through its Executive Committee and subsidiary committees, the Association facilitates discourse between the students and the Administration of the Norman Manley Law School. Furthermore, the Association organises seminars, networking opportunities, sporting and cultural activities, career development programmes, and publications that enrich the student experience while preparing students for legal practice.
Over the years, the Association has developed several signature traditions that have become hallmarks of student life at the Law School, including Career Week, the annual Wine and Cheese reception, moot and advocacy initiatives, sporting competitions, publications, and a wide range of cultural and social events. These activities have aided in providing professional excellence, collegiality, and a strong sense of community among students while strengthening relationships with alumni including members of the Bar, and the wider legal profession.
As the Association enters a new academic year, the President and Executive Committee are committed to strengthening student advocacy, enhancing academic and professional support, improving communication and engagement, expanding opportunities for wellness and community building, deepening alumni and stakeholder partnerships, and ensuring transparent, accountable, and student-centred leadership that advances the interests of every member of the Norman Manley Law School community.

Serving as President of the Norman Manley Law School Students’ Association is an opportunity I am deeply grateful for. As I begin this new chapter, I do so with a heart full of gratitude, excitement and hope for all that lies ahead. To have been entrusted with the privilege of serving this student body is both humbling and incredibly exciting, and I look forward to all that we will experience and accomplish together.
To our outgoing President and Executive, thank you for your service, sacrifice and the countless hours you invested in the Association. Leadership is rarely easy, and I am truly grateful for the foundation you have left for us to build on. I wish each of you every success in the next chapter of your journey.
I am also incredibly excited to welcome and serve alongside our new Executive. I have the privilege of working with a group of passionate and capable individuals who have committed themselves to serving our students, and I am eager to see the ideas, energy and dedication they will bring to the Association.
We are also fortunate to be part of a Law School that continues to invest in the development of its students and the future of the legal profession. I look forward to strengthening the relationship between the Students’ Association and the School’s administration and working together to make the Norman Manley experience even more meaningful for every student.

As I reflect on the 2025–2026 academic year, I extend my sincere gratitude to every member of my Executive for your unwavering commitment, resilience, and countless hours of service to the Norman Manley Law School Students’ Association.
Despite the unprecedented challenges we faced, particularly in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, we continued to lead with purpose, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the welfare of our students. Together, we have strengthened our Association through meaningful advocacy, constitutional reform, enhanced student engagement, academic initiatives, successful events, and the revival of programmes that will continue to benefit future generations.
Serving alongside each of you has been one of the greatest privileges of my tenure. The progress we achieved was not the work of any one individual, but the result of teamwork, sacrifice, and a shared vision of leaving the Association stronger than we found it.
To our incoming Executive, congratulations on your election. You inherit an Association built upon a strong foundation and filled with tremendous potential. - Major Handover: Provided an industrial printer, bookbags, and a $60,000 cheque to the Danny Williams School.
- Relief Work: Packaged approximately 150 care packages for hurricane relief in western parishes.

Student Events
1. NMLSSA Involvement in Orientation Week
Orientation Week is coordinated by the Norman Manley Law School Administration with collaborative input by the Norman Manley Law School Students’ Association. The programme is designed by the School, to welcome incoming students and support their transition into law school by introducing them to the School’s academic expectations, facilities, student services and wider community.
As part of this collaborative effort, the Students’ Association focuses on helping new students connect with their peers and become familiar with student life at Norman Manley. The Association introduces the Executive Committee, clubs and societies, provides opportunities for interaction with returning students, and supports activities intended to make incoming students feel welcomed, informed and included.

- Volunteer as Orientation Ambassadors.
- Assist the Association with registration, student engagement and event logistics.

2. SILK
SILK is one of the Norman Manley Law School Students’ Association’s signature fundraising events. It is a theatrical production written, directed and performed by students, showcasing acting, singing and dancing while exploring themes relevant to student life, society or the legal profession. The production provides a platform for artistic expression and collaboration while raising funds to support the Association’s programmes and initiatives.
Format and Intended Purpose
Student-led theatrical production and fundraising event featuring live acting, singing, dancing and dramatic performances. The event promotes student creativity and talent, strengthens collaboration and school spirit, and serves as one of the Association’s principal fundraising initiatives.

How students may become involved
- Audition as actors, singers or dancers.
- Join the production, choreography, music or stage management teams.
- Assist with costume design, set construction, lighting, marketing or event logistics.
- Purchase tickets and support the production.

3. Career Week
Career Week is the Association’s premier professional development initiative, connecting students with members of the Bar, Bench, public sector, private firms, corporate organisations and alumni. Through seminars, panel discussions, workshops and networking sessions, students gain practical insights into legal practice, career pathways, ethics and professional development.

4. Wine and Cheese
Wine and Cheese is the Association’s flagship networking and fundraising event, bringing together students, alumni, faculty and members of the legal profession in a relaxed and professional setting. The event promotes mentorship, professional networking and relationship-building while raising funds to support initiatives undertaken by the Students’ Association.
Format and Intended Purpose
Professional networking and fundraising event featuring guest speakers, networking opportunities, refreshments and alumni engagement.

5. Sports Day
Sports Day is an annual event that promotes physical wellness, teamwork and friendly competition among students. The programme features a variety of sporting disciplines and recreational activities designed to encourage participation, strengthen school spirit and provide a healthy balance to the rigours of legal education. It also fosters camaraderie across year groups through collaborative and competitive activities.

Student engagement, health and wellness initiative featuring athletic competitions, team sports and recreational activities. The event promotes physical well-being, teamwork, sportsmanship and school spirit.

Mooting Society
About the Society
The Norman Manley Law School Moot Society has been established to foster a culture of advocacy and provide students with opportunities to develop the practical skills essential to legal practice. Through structured training, mentorship and participation in local, regional and international competitions, the Society supports students in developing oral advocacy, legal research, written submissions and courtroom presentation skills.
Membership is open to students with an interest in advocacy, whether they are new to mooting or seeking to build on previous experience. The Society will also serve as the primary platform through which students may be identified, trained and selected to represent the School in regional and international advocacy competitions.

Registering your interest will enable the School to:
- communicate upcoming advocacy training opportunities;
- notify students of Society meetings and activities;
- invite participation in workshops and skills development sessions;
- identify students interested in representing the School in advocacy competitions.
Moot Competitions
The Norman Manley Law School actively encourages participation in regional and international competitions as an important extension of classroom learning. Alongside developing practical legal skills, students have the opportunity to represent the School, test themselves against the region’s best student advocates, develop their networks and compete for championship titles.
The Annual CCJ International Law Moot is a regional advocacy competition established by the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) to promote a deeper understanding of the Court's Original Jurisdiction and the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas.
Since its inaugural staging in 2009, the Moot has provided law students from across the Caribbean with the opportunity to research, prepare and argue complex legal issues arising under the Treaty before a simulated sitting of the Court.
It remains one of the region's leading mooting competitions, strengthening students' understanding of Caribbean Community law while developing the advocacy, legal research and analytical skills essential to professional legal practice.
The Lex Caribbean Client Interviewing Competition for Year I law students, focuses on one of the most important aspects of legal practice - the lawyer's first meeting with a client.
Participants are assessed on their ability to establish rapport, elicit relevant information through effective questioning, identify the legal issues arising from the client's circumstances, and demonstrate the professionalism and ethical standards expected of legal practitioners.
The competition provides students with an opportunity to develop practical interviewing, communication and problem-solving skills while gaining a deeper appreciation of the lawyer-client relationship and the responsibilities of client advocacy. It also encourages engagement with peers from across the region, fostering professional relationships early in their legal careers.
The Margaret Forte Inter-Schools Mock Trial Competition named in honour of the late Margaret Forte, KC, was established to promote excellence in trial advocacy and provides students with the opportunity to develop and showcase the practical skills required in courtroom litigation.
The competition simulates criminal trial proceedings, with participants assuming the roles of prosecuting and defence counsel, examining witnesses, presenting evidence and delivering submissions before a judge. It develops courtroom advocacy, case preparation, witness examination and the application of the rules of evidence while strengthening the practical litigation skills essential to legal practice.
Scholarships, Prizes & Bursaries
The Norman Manley Law School supports student achievement and access through a range of scholarships, prizes and bursaries. These include established awards offered by the Council of Legal Education, as well as opportunities made possible through the support of donors and partners. The awards available may vary from year to year and will be confirmed once funding and eligibility requirements have been finalised.
Scholarships, prizes and bursaries are available only to students enrolled at the School.
Applications generally open in November each year, and details of confirmed opportunities, eligibility criteria, required documents and deadlines will be published through the School’s official student communication channels.
Orientation
Orientation welcomes new students to the Norman Manley Law School and introduces them to the academic, professional and community life of the School. Held at the beginning of the academic year, it provides essential guidance on programmes, policies, student services and the expectations of professional legal education.
New students also have the opportunity to meet members of the School’s leadership, faculty, staff and student community as they prepare to begin their studies. Orientation schedules, requirements and related updates will be published here ahead of the new academic year.
Graduation
Graduation is the culmination of the Norman Manley Law School journey and one of the School’s signature annual events. Held each September, the ceremony recognises the academic achievement, professional growth and perseverance of the graduating class as they prepare to enter the legal profession.
The occasion brings together graduands, families, faculty, staff, alumni and members of the profession to mark this important transition. Ceremony details, requirements, deadlines and updates for the graduating class will be published here as Graduation approaches.
The 2026 Graduation will be held on Saturday, 26 September 2026 at the Jamaica College Auditorium.
