Student Handbook

The Student Handbook is an essential guide to academic and student life at the Norman Manley Law School. It introduces the School’s administrative offices and departments, outlines the services they provide and explains how each area supports students throughout their period of study.

The Handbook also brings together key academic and practical information, including programme requirements, assessments, examinations, student responsibilities and the use of platforms such as Westlaw TWEN, Microsoft Teams and official School communication channels. Students are encouraged to read it carefully and refer to it throughout the academic year.

CLE Regulations

The academic requirements of the Norman Manley Law School are governed by the Council of Legal Education Professional Law Schools Regulations, 2016. The Regulations set out important provisions relating to the course of study, attendance, assessments, examinations, progression and other matters that affect students throughout the programme.

All students are expected to read and become familiar with the Regulations and associated amendments.

From time to time, the Council of Legal Education or the School may also introduce policy guidelines to give effect to, clarify or supplement particular provisions. These will be communicated to students through the School’s official channels.

Serving as President of the Norman Manley Law School Students’ Association is an opportunity I am deeply grateful for. As I begin this new chapter, I do so with a heart full of gratitude, excitement and hope for all that lies ahead. To have been entrusted with the privilege of serving this student body is both humbling and incredibly exciting, and I look forward to all that we will experience and accomplish together.

To our outgoing President and Executive, thank you for your service, sacrifice and the countless hours you invested in the Association. Leadership is rarely easy, and I am truly grateful for the foundation you have left for us to build on. I wish each of you every success in the next chapter of your journey.

I am also incredibly excited to welcome and serve alongside our new Executive. I have the privilege of working with a group of passionate and capable individuals who have committed themselves to serving our students, and I am eager to see the ideas, energy and dedication they will bring to the Association.

We are also fortunate to be part of a Law School that continues to invest in the development of its students and the future of the legal profession. I look forward to strengthening the relationship between the Students’ Association and the School’s administration and working together to make the Norman Manley experience even more meaningful for every student.

I am grateful for the support the School has extended to the Association and remain excited about what can be achieved through continued collaboration.

To every Norman Manley student, this Association belongs to you. Your voice matters, your experience matters, and I hope you will allow us the opportunity to serve and advocate for you. Law school is demanding, but it is also a journey that shapes us in remarkable ways. My hope is that we support one another, celebrate each other’s successes and create memories that remain with us long after we leave these halls.

I am genuinely excited for this chapter and deeply grateful for the opportunity to experience it with you. There is so much ahead of us, and I cannot wait to see what we will accomplish together.

As I reflect on the 2025–2026 academic year, I extend my sincere gratitude to every member of my Executive for your unwavering commitment, resilience, and countless hours of service to the Norman Manley Law School Students’ Association.

Despite the unprecedented challenges we faced, particularly in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, we continued to lead with purpose, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the welfare of our students. Together, we have strengthened our Association through meaningful advocacy, constitutional reform, enhanced student engagement, academic initiatives, successful events, and the revival of programmes that will continue to benefit future generations.

Serving alongside each of you has been one of the greatest privileges of my tenure. The progress we achieved was not the work of any one individual, but the result of teamwork, sacrifice, and a shared vision of leaving the Association stronger than we found it.

To our incoming Executive, congratulations on your election. You inherit an Association built upon a strong foundation and filled with tremendous potential. Lead with humility, courage, and a genuine commitment to service. Remember that leadership is measured not by titles, but by the positive impact you have on those you represent.

Student Events

Scholarships, Prizes & Bursaries

The Norman Manley Law School supports student achievement and access through a range of scholarships, prizes and bursaries. These include established awards offered by the Council of Legal Education, as well as opportunities made possible through the support of donors and partners. The awards available may vary from year to year and will be confirmed once funding and eligibility requirements have been finalised.

Scholarships, prizes and bursaries are available only to students enrolled at the School.

Applications generally open in November each year, and details of confirmed opportunities, eligibility criteria, required documents and deadlines will be published through the School’s official student communication channels.

Orientation

Orientation welcomes new students to the Norman Manley Law School and introduces them to the academic, professional and community life of the School. Held at the beginning of the academic year, it provides essential guidance on programmes, policies, student services and the expectations of professional legal education.

New students also have the opportunity to meet members of the School’s leadership, faculty, staff and student community as they prepare to begin their studies. Orientation schedules, requirements and related updates will be published here ahead of the new academic year.

GRADUATION

Graduation is the culmination of the Norman Manley Law School journey and one of the School’s signature annual events. Held each September, the ceremony recognises the academic achievement, professional growth and perseverance of the graduating class as they prepare to enter the legal profession.

The occasion brings together graduands, families, faculty, staff, alumni and members of the profession to mark this important transition. Ceremony details, requirements, deadlines and updates for the graduating class will be published here as Graduation approaches.

The 2026 Graduation will be held on Saturday, 26 September 2026 at the Jamaica College Auditorium.
