Admissions – Two –Year Programme

1. The Application Form

Prospective students must complete an application form and submit to the School between November 1 and January 31, annually. The completed application form should be addressed to:

2. Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for direct admission, applicants must be in possession of an approved qualification. The approved qualifications are:

  1. An LLB degree from the University of the West Indies:
  2. An LLB degree from the University of Guyana provided that:
    • The holder of the degree is a national of Guyana
    • The degree was awarded in 1998 or afterwards
    • The holder is included in the list of 25 graduates provided to the Council of Legal Education

Persons not qualified at i) and ii) above who wish to be considered for admission, and who are in possession of the following qualification must sit the annual entrance examination conducted by the Council of Legal Education:

  1. a first degree in law awarded by a university in a common law jurisdiction;
  2. the Common Professional Examination Certificate (UK) together with vocational training;
  3. an LLB degree awarded by the University of Guyana to:
     
    1. (a) non-nationals of Guyana;
    2. (b) nationals of Guyana not included in the list of 25 graduates provided by the Council of Legal Education;
    3. (c) all persons awarded the law degree prior to 1998

The Law Schools are zoned for the admission of students from the participating territories of the West Indies. Application for entry to the Norman Manley Law School shall be made by persons ordinarily resident in Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Belize, Jamaica, Montserrat and St. Kitts and Nevis. Applications from the other territories should be made to the Hugh Wooding Law School and the Eugene Dupuch Law School.

Notwithstanding this, the Principal may admit in exceptional circumstances, a student zoned for the Hugh Wooding Law School or the Eugene Dupuch Law School.

 

3. DOCUMENTS TO BE SUBMITTED WITH YOUR APPLICATION

  • Original transcript sent directly from the institution, addressed to the Registrar of the Norman Manley Law School.
  • Certified copy of Birth Certificate
  • Certified Copy of Passport
  • Deed Poll and, or Marriage Certificate, if there has been a name changes
  • Three Passport Sized Photograph Taken Within the Last Six Months
  • Non-refundable and Non-transferable Application Fee of US$15.00. This should be paid via Bank Draft/Manager’s Cheque in US$. This should be made payable to the Norman Manley Law School and must accompany the completed application.
  • Cash or equivalent currencies will not be accepted.

 

4. References

Two references should be submitted in support of your application. The Regulations require that a referee must be one of the following:

  1. A judge of superior Court; or
  2. An Attorney-At-Law of at least seven years’ experience; or
  3. A Magistrate with a minimum of three years’ experience: or
  4. A Principal of an Educational Institution; or
  5. A Medical Doctor who has been registered to practice for at least seven years

Admissions – Six Month Programme

Eligibility Criteria

An applicant for admission to the Six-Month programme must:

  1. have obtained a degree of a University or institution which is recognized by the Council as being equivalent to the degree of Bachelor of Laws of the University of the West Indies; and
  2. hold either:
    1. a qualification which had it been obtained prior to 1st October, 1972, would have been recognized by all of the participating territories as a qualification to be admitted to practise as a barrister or solicitor in those territories; or
    2. a qualification obtained in a common law jurisdiction for admission to practise law in that jurisdiction and which qualification is approved by the Council; and
  3. furnish a certificate of good standing from the competent authority in the jurisdiction where he/she has been admitted to practise.
